Lentil Market Size in the Dominican Republic

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Dominican lentil market, when its value decreased by -83.2% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible expansion. Lentil consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of lentils, when their volume increased by 125% to X kg. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 33,240%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lentil exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 73,170% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Aruba (X kg) was the main destination for lentil exports from the Dominican Republic, with a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, lentil exports to Aruba exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X kg), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Aruba stood at -32.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+6.2% per year) and the United States (+1.8% per year).

In value terms, Aruba ($X) remains the key foreign market for lentils exports from the Dominican Republic, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Aruba amounted to -26.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+5.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+12.7% per year).

In 2022, the average lentil export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 234%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Imports into the Dominican Republic

In 2022, imports of lentils into the Dominican Republic declined dramatically to X tons, dropping by -88.6% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 268%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lentil imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 289% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In 2022, the United States (X tons) was the main supplier of lentil to the Dominican Republic, accounting for a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain (X tons), with a 1.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +9.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-9.0% per year) and Canada (-37.5% per year).
