The Dominican skim milk market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a buoyant expansion. Skim milk consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from the Dominican Republic

In 2021, overseas shipments of skim milk decreased by -25.2% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 68%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, skim milk exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Trinidad and Tobago (X tons) was the main destination for skim milk exports from the Dominican Republic, accounting for a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, skim milk exports to Trinidad and Tobago exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Curacao (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Haiti (X tons), with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Trinidad and Tobago totaled +339.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Curacao (+46.6% per year) and Haiti (-1.4% per year).

In value terms, Trinidad and Tobago ($X) remains the key foreign market for skim milk exports from the Dominican Republic, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Curacao ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Haiti, with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Trinidad and Tobago amounted to +313.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Curacao (+55.7% per year) and Haiti (-6.7% per year).

In 2021, the average skim milk export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -5.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to British Virgin Islands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the Dominican Republic

After five years of growth, supplies from abroad of skim milk decreased by -11% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 180% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, skim milk imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -9.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 178% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Spain (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of skim milk imports to the Dominican Republic, together comprising 98% of total imports.
