In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in the Dominican technical textiles market, when its value increased by 0.5% to $X. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 1,242% against the previous year. Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for technical textiles exports from the Dominican Republic, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, technical textiles exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Trinidad and Tobago (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Haiti (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Vietnam stood at +10.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Trinidad and Tobago (+2.3% per year) and Haiti (+28.7% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the key foreign market for textile products and articles for technical uses exports from the Dominican Republic, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Haiti ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Trinidad and Tobago, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Vietnam totaled +6.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Haiti (+17.6% per year) and Trinidad and Tobago (-0.2% per year).

The average technical textiles export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 45%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Jamaica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the Dominican Republic

In 2021, the amount of textile products and articles for technical uses imported into the Dominican Republic fell markedly to X tons, which is down by -47.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, technical textiles imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports faced a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. The United States (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of technical textiles imports to the Dominican Republic, with a combined 55% share of total imports. Honduras, Panama, Taiwan (Chinese), Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
