Watermelon Market Size in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican watermelon market was estimated at $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, posted a significant increase. The United States (X tons), Haiti (X tons) and Jamaica (X tons) were the main destinations of watermelon exports from the Dominican Republic, with a combined 80% share of total exports. Curacao, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Italy and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Curacao (with a CAGR of +70.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Overall, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, watermelon export price decreased by -3.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 40% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of watermelons were imported into the Dominican Republic; dropping by -15.4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 598%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, watermelon imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded significant growth.
