Animal Fats Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian animal fats market fell remarkably to $X in 2021, reducing by -17.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed resilient growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of animal fats and oils increased by 107% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed a significant increase. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, animal fats exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 497% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2021. South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the animal fats and oils exports, with a CAGR of +335.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Korea (+23.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of China (+96 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Korea (-50.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest animal fats supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 3.4% share of total exports.

In China, animal fats exports expanded at an average annual rate of +237.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -21.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 227% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while China stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-22.5%).

In 2021, overseas purchases of animal fats and oils increased by 66% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, animal fats imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 86%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

South Korea (X tons) and Japan (X tons) represented roughly 81% of total imports in 2021. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by China (8.5%).

In terms of the main importing countries, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +41.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -18.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 107%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
