Apricot Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian apricot market reduced to $X in 2022, shrinking by -10.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Apricot Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, apricot production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 345% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Japan (X tons), China (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), together accounting for 99.9% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +0.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

The average apricot yield declined to X tons per ha in 2022, shrinking by -9.7% against the year before. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 24%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, shipments abroad of apricots increased by 142% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apricot exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the key exporter of apricots in Eastern Asia, comprising 100% of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the apricots exports, with a CAGR of -11.9% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest apricot supplier in Eastern Asia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to -8.4%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for China.

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of apricots were imported in Eastern Asia; waning by -48% compared with 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 547% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apricot imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed pronounced growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 153% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the largest importer of apricots, generating 53% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (21%). Macao SAR (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Macao SAR (+31.6%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Macao SAR emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +31.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+21 p.p.) and Macao SAR (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Taiwan (Chinese) and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -2% and -22% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 96% of total imports. Macao SAR lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 3.7%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Macao SAR, with a CAGR of +37.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 410% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Macao SAR (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
