Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of asparagus decreased by -53.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 194%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, asparagus exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 153%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

Exports by Country

China was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), making up a 10% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of asparagus. At the same time, South Korea (+74.1%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+11.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +74.1% from 2012-2022. South Korea, with a CAGR of +62.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -35.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 16%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Asia

For the fourth consecutive year, Eastern Asia recorded decline in supplies from abroad of asparagus, which decreased by -17% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asparagus imports shrank sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 21%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Japan (X tons) represented the largest importer of asparagus, comprising 61% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and South Korea (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asparagus imports into Japan stood at -7.4%. At the same time, South Korea (+12.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2022. Hong Kong SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Korea and Hong Kong SAR increased by +7.1 and +5.6 percentage points, respectively. In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asparagus in Eastern Asia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with an 11% share.

In Japan, asparagus imports contracted by an average annual rate of -8.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+14.3% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+5.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -1.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 7.5% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
