In 2021, the East Asian agglomerated powder rod market decreased by -23.3% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, agglomerated powder rod exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw resilient growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2021. South Korea (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Japan (X tons). All these countries together took near 17% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to agglomerated powder rod exports from China stood at -1.4%. At the same time, South Korea (+20.2%) and Japan (+13.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +20.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-13.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Korea (+8 p.p.) and Japan (+5.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.5 p.p.) and China (-8.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X) emerged as the largest agglomerated powder rod supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 19% share.

In China, agglomerated powder rod exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+2.9% per year) and South Korea (+29.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -37.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 185% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of base metal wire and rods of agglomerated base powder were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, agglomerated powder rod imports fell modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 85%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Japan dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), generating a 6.1% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Japan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the base metal wire and rods of agglomerated base powder imports, with a CAGR of +17.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Korea (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, China (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Japan increased by +41 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
