Base Station Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2021, the East Asian base station market decreased by -8.5% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of base stations increased by 39% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, base station exports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 13%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 90% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - together made up 8.4% of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of base stations. Taiwan (Chinese) (-8.2%), Hong Kong SAR (-16.0%) and South Korea (-21.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+22 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Taiwan (Chinese), Hong Kong SAR and South Korea saw its share reduced by -2.1%, -8.5% and -9.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest base station supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 5.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 3.6% share.

In China, base station exports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-16.1% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -19.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 19%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+13.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of base stations increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after seven years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, base station imports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Japan prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 89% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), constituting an 8.3% share of total imports.

Japan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the base stations imports, with a CAGR of -1.4% from 2012 to 2021. Hong Kong SAR (-17.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Japan increased by +33 percentage points.
