Beer Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian beer market fell modestly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of beer increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +18.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 25%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +24.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

China was the main exporter of beer in Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 70% of total exports in 2022. South Korea (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (11%) and Hong Kong SAR (5%).

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beer exports, with a CAGR of +7.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Japan (+7.0%) and Hong Kong SAR (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Korea (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China and Japan increased by +13 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The following importers - Japan (X tons), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tons) and Macao SAR (X tons) - together made up 9% of total imports.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beer in Eastern Asia, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +16.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+11.8% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.2% per year).

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.
