Beryl Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2021, the East Asian beryl market decreased by -15.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +40.4% against 2017 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Beryl Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, beryl production dropped markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas shipments of beryl increased by 927% to X kg for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 2,380%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beryl exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,649%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Japan (X kg) was the main exporter of beryl in Eastern Asia, generating 98% of total export.

Japan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beryl exports, with a CAGR of -14.3% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Japan increased by +23 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) also remains the largest beryl supplier in Eastern Asia.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -27.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 58%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Japan.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Japan amounted to +2.4% per year.

Beryl Imports

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of beryl, when their volume decreased by -55.3% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 1,302%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, beryl imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 3,108%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

China dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 95% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Japan (X kg) and Hong Kong SAR (X kg) - each accounted for a 4.1% share of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beryl imports, with a CAGR of +31.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Japan (+30.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-25.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+42 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported beryl in Eastern Asia, comprising 98% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 1.4% share of total imports.

In China, beryl imports expanded at an average annual rate of +26.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+21.1% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-25.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 95% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price posted a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 516%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
