For the eleventh consecutive year, the East Asian blueberry and cranberry market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 26% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption enjoyed strong growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 42% against the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 310% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 246% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

The shipments of the one major exporters of blueberries and cranberries, namely Hong Kong SAR, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Hong Kong SAR was also the fastest-growing in terms of the blueberries and cranberries exports, with a CAGR of +52.8% from 2012 to 2022. Hong Kong SAR (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) also remains the largest blueberry and cranberry supplier in Eastern Asia.

In Hong Kong SAR, blueberry and cranberry exports increased at an average annual rate of +56.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Hong Kong SAR.

Imports in Eastern Asia

For the eleventh year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded growth in purchases abroad of blueberries and cranberries, which increased by 16% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, blueberry and cranberry imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

China represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 57% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 34% share, followed by South Korea (4.7%). The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Japan (X tons) - each recorded a 4.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +48.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest blueberry and cranberry importing markets in Eastern Asia were China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +49.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
