Bridge Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian bridge market stood at $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bridge production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 16%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, bridge exports in Eastern Asia skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 15% against the year before. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +48.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 59%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bridge exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +101.7% against 2018 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) represented the key exporter of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel), comprising 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), generating a 20% share of total exports. Japan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Japan (+17.1%) and South Korea (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +17.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of China (+4.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Korea (-6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest bridge supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +6.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+2.3% per year) and Japan (+18.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 22% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) increased by 1.8% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 164%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, bridge imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 141%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the key importers of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) in Eastern Asia, together mixing up 79% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), generating a 15% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons) and China (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
