Carob Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian carob market declined to $X in 2022, shrinking by -8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Carob Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, carob production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Macao SAR (X tons) and Japan (X tons).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Macao SAR (with a CAGR of +1.4%).

Carob Exports

Exports in Eastern Asia

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of carob increased by 638% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carob exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of carob, namely Japan, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Japan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carob exports, with a CAGR of -12.3% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) also remains the largest carob supplier in Eastern Asia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Japan amounted to -10.8%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -10.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed modest growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Japan.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Japan amounted to +1.7% per year.

Carob Imports

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2022, purchases abroad of carob increased by 4.3% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carob imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 25%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Taiwan (Chinese) was the main importer of carob in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2022. South Korea (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by China (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons). All these countries together held near 47% share of total imports. Japan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Taiwan (Chinese) was also the fastest-growing in terms of the carob imports, with a CAGR of +55.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Hong Kong SAR (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, China (-3.5%), South Korea (-13.7%) and Japan (-20.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (+50 p.p.), China (+17 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (+5.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Japan (-21.8 p.p.) and South Korea (-50.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Korea ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 84% share of total imports.

Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +50.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
