Other Cereals Market Size in Eastern Asia
In 2021, the East Asian other cereals market decreased by -12.6% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Other Cereals Production in Eastern Asia
In value terms, other cereals production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +31.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of other cereals production, accounting for 95% of total volume. Moreover, other cereals production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, South Korea (X tons), more than tenfold.
In China, other cereals production shrank by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2021.
In 2021, the average yield of other cerealses in Eastern Asia amounted to X tons per ha, leveling off at the year before. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, the other cereals yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of other cerealses production in Eastern Asia fell slightly to X ha, flattening at the previous year. In general, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 4%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the other cereals harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of other cerealses decreased by -16.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, other cereals exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 43%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2021. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from China decreased at an average annual rate of -11.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hong Kong SAR (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hong Kong SAR emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +3.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Hong Kong SAR increased by +1.8 percentage points.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest other cereals supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 7.8% share of total exports.
In China, other cereals exports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 49%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while China totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+12.9%).

Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, overseas purchases of other cerealses decreased by -49.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, other cereals imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 115%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
Imports by Country
China was the key importer of other cerealses in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 61% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons), together mixing up a 36% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to other cereals imports into China stood at -2.1%. At the same time, Hong Kong SAR (+33.0%) and Japan (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hong Kong SAR emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Korea (-6.6%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, Hong Kong SAR and Japan increased by +14, +5.2 and +4.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported other cerealses in Eastern Asia, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 12% share.
In China, other cereals imports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Taiwan (Chinese) (+6.2% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+36.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 85% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 177% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+20.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
