Market Size for Cherries and Sour Cherries in Eastern Asia

For the third year in a row, the East Asian cherry and sour cherry market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 7% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +96.9% against 2013 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Production of Cherries and Sour Cherries in Eastern Asia

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Japan (X tons), with a combined 99.9% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +1.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

In 2022, the average yield of cherries and sour cherries in Eastern Asia soared to X tons per ha, increasing by 17% on the year before. The yield indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cherry and sour cherry yield decreased by -12.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 82%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the cherry and sour cherry yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of cherries and sour cherries in Eastern Asia stood at X ha, almost unchanged from 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 3.7% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the cherry and sour cherry harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Cherry and sour cherry exports fell slightly to X tons in 2022, flattening at 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 159%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 115%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the one major exporters of cherries and sour cherries, namely Hong Kong SAR, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Hong Kong SAR was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cherries and sour cherries exports, with a CAGR of +26.1% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) also remains the largest cherry and sour cherry supplier in Eastern Asia.

In Hong Kong SAR, cherry and sour cherry exports increased at an average annual rate of +29.3% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Hong Kong SAR.

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2022, imports of cherries and sour cherries in Eastern Asia reduced slightly to X tons, waning by -2.1% compared with 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In value terms, cherry and sour cherry imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

China represented the major importer of cherries and sour cherries in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 59% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), comprising a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - each recorded a 4.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +24.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cherries and sour cherries in Eastern Asia, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 31% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +24.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+18.3% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
