Sour Cherry Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian sour cherry market surged to $X in 2022, jumping by 31% against the previous year. Sour cherry exports contracted to X tons in 2022, dropping by -9.3% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 558% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sour cherry exports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 602%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Hong Kong SAR represented the largest exporter of sour cherries in Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by China (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), together making up a 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sour cherry exports from Hong Kong SAR stood at +20.4%. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+37.3%) and China (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +37.3% from 2012-2022. Hong Kong SAR (+21 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+6.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while China saw its share reduced by -29.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the largest sour cherry supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Hong Kong SAR amounted to +44.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+18.0% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+41.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 134% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of sour cherries were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -34.2% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sour cherry imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the largest importer of sour cherries, creating 49% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons), together creating a 50% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +15.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
