Chestnut Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2021, the East Asian chestnut market increased by 0.6% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a mild contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chestnut exports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 4% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) was the largest exporter of chestnuts, mixing up 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), comprising a 14% share of total exports. Japan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of chestnuts. Japan (-3.5%) and South Korea (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, chestnut imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Japan (X tons) was the key importer of chestnuts in Eastern Asia, achieving 100% of total import.
