Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The chick peas harvested area rose slightly to X ha in 2022, surging by 1.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to chick peas production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Asia

For the sixth consecutive year, Eastern Asia recorded decline in overseas shipments of chick peas, which decreased by -29% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports faced a significant decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 19,736% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 17,397% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 85% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), committing an 11% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chick peas exports, with a CAGR of +23.4% from 2012 to 2022. Hong Kong SAR (-13.7%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-25.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+84 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (+6.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Taiwan (Chinese) saw its share reduced by -2.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest chick peas supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with an 8.9% share of total exports.

In China, chick peas exports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (-11.5% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-23.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, chick peas export price increased by +46.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 52%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports in Eastern Asia

For the eleventh consecutive year, Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas purchases of chick peas, which increased by 10% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, chick peas imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

China represented the main importer of chick peas in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 67% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons) and Japan (X tons), together making up a 30% share of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chick peas imports, with a CAGR of +87.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+32.1%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.6%) and Japan (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced slump.
