Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 17%. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of chilies and peppers (green) decreased by -19.7% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after five years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 183%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chili and pepper imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Japan (X tons) and China (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together making up 90% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Macao SAR (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +274.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chilies and peppers (green) in Eastern Asia, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 31% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 2.9% share.
In Japan, chili and pepper imports declined by an average annual rate of -5.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+271.3% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+15.3% per year).
