Helicopter Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2022, the East Asian helicopter market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption enjoyed prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, helicopter production expanded significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports in Eastern Asia

For the third year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of civil helicopters, which increased by 45% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 80%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, helicopter exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 287%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Japan (X units) represented the largest exporter of civil helicopters, comprising 54% of total exports. China (X units) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Hong Kong SAR (16%) and South Korea (5.2%).

Exports from Japan increased at an average annual rate of +16.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+18.6%) and Hong Kong SAR (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012-2022. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Japan (+32 p.p.) and South Korea (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-7.3 p.p.) and China (-18.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest helicopter supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+24.8% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+12.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, with a decrease of -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 293%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while Japan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+9.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of civil helicopters decreased by -5.5% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, helicopter imports totaled $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -10.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 141%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Taiwan (Chinese) represented the largest importer of civil helicopters in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2022. China (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by South Korea (7.6%) and Japan (7%).

Taiwan (Chinese) was also the fastest-growing in terms of the civil helicopters imports, with a CAGR of +46.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+17.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, China (-2.5%) and Japan (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Taiwan (Chinese) (+69 p.p.) and South Korea (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while China and Japan saw its share reduced by -31.6% and -33.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest helicopter importing markets in Eastern Asia were China ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 81% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, which accounted for a further 17%.

In terms of the main importing countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +34.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 59%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
