Copper Foil Market Size in Eastern Asia
After two years of growth, the East Asian copper foil market decreased by -25.5% to $X in 2022. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of copper foil, when their volume decreased by -7.9% to X tons. Overall, exports showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, copper foil exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +37.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 39%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) represented the largest exporter of copper foil in Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 45% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Japan (X tons), together constituting a 52% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +5.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 78% of total exports. South Korea and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
Among the main exporting countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +11.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -2.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, copper foil export price increased by +60.4% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 21%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+13.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of copper foil, when their volume decreased by -19.2% to X tons. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, copper foil imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 31%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
China was the largest importer of copper foil in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 56% of total imports in 2022. South Korea (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (10%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (8.8%). Hong Kong SAR (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into China decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Japan (+4.7%), South Korea (+3.0%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-20.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Korea, China, Japan and Taiwan (Chinese) increased by +9.2, +6.4, +5.4 and +3.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper foil in Eastern Asia, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +2.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+4.8% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, copper foil import price increased by +57.1% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
