The East Asian couscous market shrank to $X in 2021, which is down by -10.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, couscous production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, overseas shipments of couscous decreased by -1.9% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 889%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, couscous exports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 537%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X kg), constituting an 18% share of total exports.
Taiwan (Chinese) was also the fastest-growing in terms of the couscous exports, with a CAGR of +31.7% from 2012 to 2021. Hong Kong SAR (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) increased by +66 percentage points.
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) emerged as the largest couscous supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 17% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Taiwan (Chinese) stood at +24.2%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -33.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 78%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+0.8%).
Couscous Imports
Imports in Eastern Asia
Couscous imports contracted to X tons in 2021, which is down by -4% on the year before. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -9.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 31%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, couscous imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
Imports by Country
China (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the largest importers of couscous in 2021, reaching near 45% and 31% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), generating an 18% share of total imports. The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) - each reached a 5.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +13.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest couscous importing markets in Eastern Asia were Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese) and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 8.2%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +16.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -22.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
