The East Asian crispbread market rose significantly to $X in 2021, picking up by 6.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crispbread production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, shipments abroad of crispbread decreased by -5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 217%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, crispbread exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 175% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Japan (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - together made up 4.2% of total exports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crispbread exports, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012 to 2021. Japan (-13.6%) and South Korea (-15.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+30 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Korea and Japan saw its share reduced by -13.2% and -17.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest crispbread supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.
In China, crispbread exports increased at an average annual rate of +13.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-7.1% per year) and South Korea (-11.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 74%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of crispbread increased by 12% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, crispbread imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Japan was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 50% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), Macao SAR (X tons) and China (X tons). All these countries together took near 45% share of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Japan decreased at an average annual rate of -3.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Macao SAR (+47.4%), China (+7.3%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Macao SAR emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +47.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-16.9%) and South Korea (-32.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), Macao SAR and China increased by +33, +20, +6.1 and +4.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported crispbread in Eastern Asia, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Japan totaled -1.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.5% per year) and South Korea (-31.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined modestly in the following year.
