In 2021, the average currant and gooseberry yield in Eastern Asia expanded modestly to X tons per ha, surging by 2.2% compared with the year before. Overall, the yield saw perceptible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 90% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the currant and gooseberry yield failed to regain momentum. In 2021, overseas shipments of currants and gooseberries increased by 74% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 473% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, currant and gooseberry exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 328% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Taiwan (Chinese) was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 67% of total exports. China (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Japan (X kg). All these countries together took approx. 33% share of total exports.
Exports from Taiwan (Chinese) increased at an average annual rate of +53.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Japan (+56.7%) and China (+35.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +56.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Taiwan (Chinese) (+34 p.p.) and Japan (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-13.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) emerged as the largest currant and gooseberry supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Taiwan (Chinese) stood at +52.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+33.9% per year) and Japan (+54.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -21.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 50%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, the amount of currants and gooseberries imported in Eastern Asia dropped rapidly to X tons, shrinking by -33.2% compared with 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 157%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, currant and gooseberry imports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 70% of total imports. Japan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Hong Kong SAR (8.5%) and Macao SAR (5.4%).
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the currants and gooseberries imports, with a CAGR of +46.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Macao SAR (+38.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (+27.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Japan (-9.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+65 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (+6.5 p.p.) and Macao SAR (+5.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Japan (-65.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported currants and gooseberries in Eastern Asia, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Macao SAR, with a 14% share.
In Japan, currant and gooseberry imports contracted by an average annual rate of -9.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (+25.2% per year) and Macao SAR (+29.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -41.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price faced a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 38% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
