The East Asian dichloromethane market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a deep contraction. In 2021, exports of dichloromethane (methylene chloride) in Eastern Asia stood at X tons, with an increase of 9.2% on 2020. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 109% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dichloromethane exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 80%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

China was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 74% of total exports. South Korea (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (7.9%) and Japan (7.5%).

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dichloromethane (methylene chloride) exports, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.6%), Japan (+5.0%) and South Korea (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest dichloromethane supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with an 8.1% share.

In China, dichloromethane exports increased at an average annual rate of +22.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+3.9% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.4% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 51% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of dichloromethane (methylene chloride) decreased by -20.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dichloromethane imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 21%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Korea prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), committing a 5.9% share of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Korea was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dichloromethane (methylene chloride) imports, with a CAGR of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021. Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.6%) and Hong Kong SAR (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Korea (+33 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Korea ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dichloromethane (methylene chloride) in Eastern Asia, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 10% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Korea totaled +1.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.7% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-2.5% per year).

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 35% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
