For the third year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of dried prunes, which increased by 39% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried prune exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) dominates exports structure, together comprising 93% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), generating a 5% share of total exports. South Korea (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest dried prune supplying countries in Eastern Asia were China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), together accounting for 94% of total exports. These countries were followed by South Korea, which accounted for a further 5.1%.

Among the main exporting countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +10.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -10% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dried prune export price decreased by -19.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 52%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Asia

For the third consecutive year, Eastern Asia recorded growth in purchases abroad of dried prunes, which increased by 48% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dried prune imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +102.0% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

China was the largest importer of dried prunes in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 69% of total imports in 2022. Japan (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Korea (X tons). All these countries together took near 27% share of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dried prunes imports, with a CAGR of +9.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.6%), Japan (-8.3%) and Hong Kong SAR (-21.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China increased by +43 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest dried prune importing markets in Eastern Asia were China ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 96% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +16.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
