Durum Wheat Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian durum wheat market fell to $X in 2022, reducing by -6.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 197%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, durum wheat exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 207%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Japan (X tons) was the key exporter of durum wheat, achieving 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), comprising a 32% share of total exports.

Japan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the durum wheat exports, with a CAGR of +14.4% from 2012 to 2022. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Japan (+65 p.p.) and China (+28 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) and China ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

Among the main exporting countries, Japan, with a CAGR of +31.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat export price increased by +81.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 52%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, purchases abroad of durum wheat decreased by -37.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 141% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, durum wheat imports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 116%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

China represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 67% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 28% share, followed by Japan (5.3%).

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+41.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +41.9% from 2012-2022. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Taiwan (Chinese) increased by +25 percentage points.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported durum wheat in Eastern Asia, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +11.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+44.0% per year) and Japan (+3.5% per year).

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
