In 2021, the East Asian ECG market decreased by -6.8% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded resilient growth. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of electro-cardiographs increased by 3.9% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. China represented the main exporter of electro-cardiographs in Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was near 76% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X units), committing a 13% share of total exports. By contrast, Japan (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China and Taiwan (Chinese) increased by +15 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest ECG supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 9.4% share.

In China, ECG exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+7.9% per year) and Japan (-8.4% per year).

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, ecg imports in Eastern Asia rose modestly to X units, with an increase of 2.7% on the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 14%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ECG imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 10% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +14.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, China (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan (Chinese), South Korea and Japan increased by +5.7, +2.4, +1.7 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Japan ($X), China ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 84% share of total imports. South Korea and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +8.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while South Korea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
