Flax Fiber Market Size in Eastern Asia
The East Asian flax fiber market expanded significantly to $X in 2022, increasing by 8.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -12.5% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Flax Fiber Production in Eastern Asia
In value terms, flax fiber production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 61%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.
China (X tons) remains the largest flax fiber producing country in Eastern Asia, comprising approx. 98% of total volume. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 1.9% share of total production.
In China, flax fiber production declined by an average annual rate of -10.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
The average flax fiber yield shrank slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, falling by -2.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 134% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the flax fiber yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of flax fiber production in Eastern Asia expanded slightly to X ha, surging by 2.8% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 12%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Asia
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of flax fiber decreased by -48.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 78% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
In value terms, flax fiber exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 124%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) represented the major exporter of flax fiber, comprising 64% of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (10%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to flax fiber exports from China stood at +2.2%. At the same time, Japan (+15.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Japan (+7.4 p.p.) and China (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Taiwan (Chinese) saw its share reduced by -9.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest flax fiber supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +1.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.8% per year) and Japan (+17.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2022, overseas purchases of flax fiber decreased by -7.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, flax fiber imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total imports in 2022.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the flax fiber imports, with a CAGR of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of China (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported flax fiber in Eastern Asia.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +9.9%.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 21% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for China.
