In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas shipments of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat, when their volume increased by 1.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen pork cut exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Hong Kong SAR dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Japan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to frozen pork cut exports from Hong Kong SAR stood at -11.0%. At the same time, Japan (+14.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012-2022. Hong Kong SAR (+2.8 p.p.) and Japan (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -12.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (-0.1%).

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2022, purchases abroad of frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat decreased by -54.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 116%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, frozen pork cut imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 171% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then plummeted in the following year.

China (X tons) represented roughly 98% of total imports in 2022.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen hams, shoulders and cuts of pig meat imports, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012 to 2022.
