Garlic Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian garlic market contracted to $X in 2022, waning by -3.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Garlic Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, garlic production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 22%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of garlic production was China (X tons), comprising approx. 98% of total volume. It was followed by South Korea (X tons), with a 1.6% share of total production.

In China, garlic production increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2022.

The average garlic yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the garlic yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. In 2022, approx. X tons of garlic were exported in Eastern Asia; surging by 6.6% against the year before. Total exports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -9.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 39%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -12.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of garlic, namely China, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the garlic exports, with a CAGR of +3.7% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest garlic supplier in Eastern Asia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +2.6%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -17.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 26%. In 2022, purchases abroad of garlic was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 97% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of garlic imports in 2022 were Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), together finishing at 95% of total import. Macao SAR (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +17.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and South Korea ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 97% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +21.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -12.6% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 47%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Macao SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Macao SAR (+4.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
