Ginger Market Size in Eastern Asia

For the third consecutive year, the East Asian ginger market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 10% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +63.7% against 2017 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Ginger Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, ginger production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons) remains the largest ginger producing country in Eastern Asia, accounting for 86% of total volume. Moreover, ginger production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Japan (X tons), more than tenfold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China stood at +2.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Japan (-2.2% per year) and South Korea (+22.4% per year).

The average ginger yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of ginger were harvested in Eastern Asia; declining by -1.6% on the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 10%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of ginger decreased by -12.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -25.7% against 2020 indices. In 2022, China (X tons) was the largest exporter of ginger in Eastern Asia, mixing up 100% of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ginger exports, with a CAGR of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest ginger supplier in Eastern Asia.

In 2022, imports of ginger in Eastern Asia amounted to X tons, picking up by 13% compared with 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 18%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, ginger imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 33%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Japan (X tons) was the main importer of ginger, creating 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), achieving an 18% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons) and Macao SAR (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ginger imports into Japan stood at -1.4%. At the same time, China (+46.2%) and Macao SAR (+22.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ginger in Eastern Asia, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Japan was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+38.0% per year) and South Korea (+9.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -17.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 41%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Macao SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+15.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
