Graphic Papers Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2022, the East Asian graphic papers market decreased by -5.7% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of graphic papers increased by 27% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphic papers exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 59% of total exports. South Korea (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Japan (14%).

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of graphic papers. At the same time, Japan (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +2.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Korea (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+13 p.p.) and Japan (+5.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Korea (-15.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest graphic papers supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +1.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-4.5% per year) and Japan (+1.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of graphic papers, when their volume decreased by -46.2% to X tons. In general, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 14%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, graphic papers imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 54% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons), together generating a 46% share of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the graphic papers imports, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022. South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Japan (-10.9%) and Hong Kong SAR (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+36 p.p.) and South Korea (+5.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Hong Kong SAR and Japan saw its share reduced by -8.3% and -17% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In China, graphic papers imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-12.2% per year) and South Korea (-0.4% per year).

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
