The East Asian non-wheat groats market contracted to $X in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

South Korea represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 78% of total exports. China (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Japan (X tons). All these countries together took near 21% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-wheat groats exports from South Korea stood at -6.9%. At the same time, Hong Kong SAR (+61.0%), China (+49.4%) and Japan (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hong Kong SAR emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +61.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+10 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (+5.7 p.p.) and Japan (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Korea (-17 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the largest non-wheat groats supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with an 8.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 7.8% share.

In South Korea, non-wheat groats exports plunged by an average annual rate of -9.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+41.0% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) increased by 6.8% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-wheat groats imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) dominates imports structure, together constituting 75% of total imports. Japan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.3% share, followed by South Korea (8.7%) and China (6.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +7.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) and Japan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 81% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea and China, which together accounted for a further 19%.

In terms of the main importing countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +9.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
