In 2021, the East Asian gypsum and anhydrite market decreased by -16.4% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Gypsum And Anhydrite Production in Eastern Asia
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite production fell sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, enjoyed a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, overseas shipments of gypsum and anhydrite increased by 22% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Korea prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), achieving a 6.5% share of total exports.
South Korea was also the fastest-growing in terms of the gypsum and anhydrite exports, with a CAGR of +57.9% from 2012 to 2021. China (-16.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Korea (+90 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of China (-75.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest gypsum and anhydrite supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.
In China, gypsum and anhydrite exports declined by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -13.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while South Korea amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+18.2%).

Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of gypsum and anhydrite decreased by -7.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -14.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite imports totaled $X in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 29%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Japan represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 64% of total imports. China (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by South Korea (14%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (6.2%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gypsum and anhydrite imports into Japan stood at +2.6%. At the same time, China (+40.2%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+18.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +40.2% from 2012-2021. South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China and Taiwan (Chinese) increased by +14 and +4.2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gypsum and anhydrite in Eastern Asia, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 14% share.
In Japan, gypsum and anhydrite imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+25.3% per year) and South Korea (+2.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
