The East Asian hair spray market fell to $X in 2022, waning by -2.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. China represented the major exporter of hair sprays in Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), mixing up a 12% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest hair spray supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +7.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+4.7% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+16.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -8.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hair spray export price increased by +54.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Hair spray imports declined dramatically to X tons in 2022, waning by -22.2% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hair spray imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In 2022, China (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) represented the main importer of hair sprays in Eastern Asia, comprising 91% of total import. The following importers - Macao SAR (X tons), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tons) and Japan (X tons) - together made up 9.2% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Democratic People's Republic of Korea (with a CAGR of +35.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hair sprays in Eastern Asia, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +11.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+9.9% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-6.4% per year).
