Hazelnut Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the East Asian hazelnut market, when its value increased by 20% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hazelnut production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 292%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

China (X tons) remains the largest hazelnut producing country in Eastern Asia, accounting for 97% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China was relatively modest.

In 2021, the average hazelnut yield in Eastern Asia amounted to X tons per ha, growing by 3.5% against the previous year. In general, the yield, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the hazelnut yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The hazelnut harvested area declined modestly to X ha in 2021, standing approx. at 2020. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 4.3% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the hazelnut harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, hazelnut exports in Eastern Asia declined notably to X tons, reducing by -76% on the previous year. In general, exports showed a sharp reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 137%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hazelnut exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 129%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Hong Kong SAR represented the main exporter of hazelnuts in Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), generating a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to hazelnut exports from Hong Kong SAR stood at -32.9%. At the same time, China (+16.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +16.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of China (+16 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-15.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the largest hazelnut supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

In Hong Kong SAR, hazelnut exports shrank by an average annual rate of -34.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in Eastern Asia, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports.

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.
