The East Asian hydraulic lime market fell modestly to $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a pronounced shrinkage. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of hydraulic lime imported in Eastern Asia soared to X tons, jumping by 136% compared with the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 220% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hydraulic lime imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 348%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Hong Kong SAR represented the key importer of hydraulic lime in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 72% of total imports in 2022. Macao SAR (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by China (8.2%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (4.7%). South Korea (X tons) and Japan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Hong Kong SAR was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hydraulic lime imports, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, China (+13.1%), Japan (+9.5%) and Macao SAR (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-8.7%) and South Korea (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hong Kong SAR (+52 p.p.) and China (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Macao SAR, Taiwan (Chinese) and South Korea saw its share reduced by -5%, -21.2% and -28.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and Macao SAR ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 92% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +19.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -45.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 51%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
