For the fifth year in a row, the East Asian marble building stone market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3.4% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption saw a prominent increase. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +47.5% against 2016 indices. For the third year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded decline in overseas shipments of marble building stone, which decreased by -7.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 7.3% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, marble building stone exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 26%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of marble building stone, namely China, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the marble building stone exports, with a CAGR of -8.0% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest marble building stone supplier in Eastern Asia.

Based on 2021 figures, marble building stone export price increased by +91.4% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Marble building stone imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, jumping by 41% against the year before. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 99%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, marble building stone imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 83% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

South Korea represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 74% of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Japan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 16% share of total imports. The following importers - China (X tons), Macao SAR (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) - each recorded a 9.1% share of total imports.

South Korea was also the fastest-growing in terms of the marble building stone imports, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012 to 2021. Macao SAR (-1.3%), Japan (-1.4%), China (-6.3%), Hong Kong SAR (-7.4%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Korea (+27 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Japan (-2.1 p.p.), China (-3.7 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.7 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-14.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Korea ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported marble building stone in Eastern Asia, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Korea amounted to +2.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (-1.7% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-6.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -11.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Macao SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
