Matches Market Size in Eastern Asia

The East Asian matches market fell slightly to $X in 2021, reducing by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Matches Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, matches production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

China prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2021. Japan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the matches exports, with a CAGR of -5.1% from 2012 to 2021. Japan (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China increased by +4.6 percentage points.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest matches supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 5.8% share of total exports.

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 23%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.3%).

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of matches increased by 49% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after six years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable slump. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, matches imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

South Korea was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 55% of total imports. Japan (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (15%) and Hong Kong SAR (9%). China (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of matches. At the same time, Japan (+36.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +36.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-7.5%), Hong Kong SAR (-10.4%) and China (-21.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Korea (+19 p.p.) and Japan (+16 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Taiwan (Chinese), Hong Kong SAR and China saw its share reduced by -6.8%, -8.2% and -20.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Korea ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported matches in Eastern Asia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 30% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 4.9% share.

In South Korea, matches imports expanded at an average annual rate of +18.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+23.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed prominent growth.
