Melon Market Size in Eastern Asia

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, melon imports contracted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Hong Kong SAR (X tons) represented the main importer of melons, achieving 59% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons) and Macao SAR (X tons), together achieving a 31% share of total imports. The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - each finished at an 8.3% share of total imports.

Hong Kong SAR was also the fastest-growing in terms of the melons imports, with a CAGR of +15.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.1%) and Macao SAR (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Japan (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Hong Kong SAR (+45 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan saw its share reduced by -37.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest melon importing markets in Eastern Asia were Hong Kong SAR ($X), Japan ($X) and Macao SAR ($X), together comprising 89% of total imports.

Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +14.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 8.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 16%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
