In 2021, the East Asian non-medical x-ray market decreased by -23.6% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray production contracted rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 123%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined notably in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Asia

For the third year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of non-medical x-rays, which increased by 40% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) was the main exporter of non-medical x-rays, comprising 60% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and South Korea (X tons), together comprising a 38% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +15.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+20.8%) and South Korea (+17.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2021. Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+18 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+6.3 p.p.) and South Korea (+4.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR and Japan saw its share reduced by -3.7% and -25% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest non-medical x-ray supplying countries in Eastern Asia were China ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 89% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese) and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 11%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +24.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -16.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of non-medical x-rays increased by 2.8% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +69.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray imports amounted to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

China represented the largest importer of non-medical x-rays in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 57% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), together making up a 43% share of total imports.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Hong Kong SAR (+16.1%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+15.1%), South Korea (+3.2%) and Japan (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hong Kong SAR emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan (Chinese) increased by +6.6 and +5.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-medical x-rays in Eastern Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China stood at +5.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+4.4% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+9.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight reduction. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
