In 2021, the East Asian non-wheat flour market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. In 2021, shipments abroad of non-wheat flours increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 61%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 64%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Hong Kong SAR represented the key exporter of non-wheat flours in Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 78% of total exports in 2021. China (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Korea (5.6%). The following exporters - Japan (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) - each finished at a 5.2% share of total exports.

Exports from Hong Kong SAR decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Japan (+10.8%), China (+4.0%) and South Korea (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +10.8% from 2012-2021. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. China (+4.7 p.p.), Japan (+1.8 p.p.) and South Korea (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -8.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) remains the largest non-wheat flour supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 7.8% share.

In Hong Kong SAR, non-wheat flour exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+7.9% per year) and South Korea (+2.5% per year).

Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. In 2021, China (X tons) was the major importer of non-wheat flours, creating 48% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), together committing a 49% share of total imports.

Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Korea (+12.6%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-2.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Korea (+9.7 p.p.) and China (+8.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -16.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-wheat flours in Eastern Asia, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +6.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hong Kong SAR (-1.8% per year) and South Korea (+10.4% per year).
