Papaya Market Size in Eastern Asia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the East Asian papaya market, when its value decreased by -0.5% to $X. The total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by +0.4% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Papaya Production in Eastern Asia
In value terms, papaya production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 80% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of papaya production, accounting for 81% of total volume. Moreover, papaya production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in China amounted to +4.7%.
In 2022, the average papaya yield in Eastern Asia totaled X tons per ha, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 5.4%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of papayas in Eastern Asia dropped slightly to X ha, with a decrease of -1.8% on the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 6.2% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of papayas decreased by -16.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, papaya exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 128%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

China (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2022.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the papayas exports, with a CAGR of +6.4% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China increased by +4.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest papaya supplier in Eastern Asia.
In China, papaya exports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.8% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -14.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 53%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for China.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to +10.7% per year.
Papaya Imports
Imports in Eastern Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of papayas increased by 9.6% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, papaya imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 9.8%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main importers of papayas in Eastern Asia, together creating 65% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Macao SAR (X tons) and Japan (X tons), together constituting a 32% share of total imports. South Korea (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest papaya importing markets in Eastern Asia were Hong Kong SAR ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 89% share of total imports. Macao SAR and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.
Macao SAR, with a CAGR of +18.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Macao SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Macao SAR (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
