Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of pears, when their volume increased by 2.6% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Hong Kong SAR represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 78% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by China (8.8%). Macao SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to pear imports into Hong Kong SAR stood at -1.4%. At the same time, China (+15.8%), Macao SAR (+5.9%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of China (+6.5 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-9.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pears in Eastern Asia, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 17% share.

In Hong Kong SAR, pear imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.7% per year) and China (+18.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 14%.
