Persimmon Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the East Asian persimmon market, when its value decreased by -1.4% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Persimmon Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, persimmon production declined slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +50.5% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 31%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of persimmon production, accounting for 87% of total volume. Moreover, persimmon production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, South Korea (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to +1.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (-6.0% per year) and Japan (-2.6% per year).

The average persimmon yield stood at X tons per ha in 2021, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 5.4% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The persimmon harvested area declined modestly to X ha in 2021, remaining constant against 2020. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to persimmon production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Exports in Eastern Asia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of persimmons decreased by -36.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2021. South Korea (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the persimmons exports, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012 to 2021. South Korea (-14.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+27 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Korea (-26 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest persimmon supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports.

In China, persimmon exports increased at an average annual rate of +20.0% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -25.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while China totaled $X per ton.

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, the amount of persimmons imported in Eastern Asia contracted to X tons, falling by -11.2% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, persimmon imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 64%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Hong Kong SAR was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 78% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Macao SAR (X tons), achieving a 16% share of total imports. The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Japan (X tons) and China (X tons) - each resulted at a 6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to persimmon imports into Hong Kong SAR stood at +5.0%. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+17.5%) and Macao SAR (+11.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +17.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, China (-11.0%) and Japan (-15.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Macao SAR (+7.6 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (+6.8 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while China and Japan saw its share reduced by -5.2% and -10.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported persimmons in Eastern Asia, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Macao SAR ($X), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 4.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Hong Kong SAR amounted to +12.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Macao SAR (+30.9% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+27.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 16% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, persimmon import price increased by +50.1% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 33%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Macao SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
