Pistachio Market Size in Eastern Asia
The East Asian pistachio market reduced remarkably to $X in 2022, which is down by -37.4% against the previous year. China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pistachio production, comprising approx. 84% of total volume. Moreover, pistachio production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), fivefold.

In 2022, shipments abroad of pistachios decreased by -45.1% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pistachio exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 47%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and China (X tons) was the key exporter of pistachios in Eastern Asia, achieving 99% of total export.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of -12.5%).
In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.
In terms of the main exporting countries, China, with a CAGR of -4.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio export price increased by +52.5% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR amounted to $X per ton.

In 2022, approx. X tons of pistachios were imported in Eastern Asia; dropping by -62.8% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pistachio imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 81% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons), together constituting a 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - together made up 5.6% of total imports.
Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+16.1%), Japan (+5.7%) and South Korea (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-28.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+60 p.p.), Japan (+5.3 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.8 p.p.) and South Korea (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-70.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pistachios in Eastern Asia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +8.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+8.2% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-27.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
