For the third year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded decline in overseas shipments of pre-shave, shaving and after-shave preparations (excluding soap in blocks), which decreased by -21.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 6.3% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shaving preparations exports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 14%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) was the main exporter of pre-shave, shaving and after-shave preparations (excluding soap in blocks), committing 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), constituting a 13% share of total exports. The following exporters - Japan (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - each recorded a 3.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to shaving preparations exports from China stood at -7.8%. At the same time, South Korea (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +2.0% from 2012-2021. In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest shaving preparations supplier in Eastern Asia, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled -4.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (-17.0% per year) and South Korea (+8.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 18% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Asia

For the third year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded decline in purchases abroad of pre-shave, shaving and after-shave preparations (excluding soap in blocks), which decreased by -1% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports showed a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shaving preparations imports expanded to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 11%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Japan (X tons) represented the major importer of pre-shave, shaving and after-shave preparations (excluding soap in blocks), generating 57% of total imports. South Korea (X tons) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by China (10%) and Hong Kong SAR (5%). Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to shaving preparations imports into Japan stood at +3.4%. At the same time, South Korea (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +7.1% from 2012-2021. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-8.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (-18.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Japan (+19 p.p.) and South Korea (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while China and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -9.3% and -22.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 88% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +3.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 2.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 8.8%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
