The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. China dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), mixing up a 7.2% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 37%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while China totaled $X per ton.

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of preserved tomatoes, when their volume decreased by -4.1% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 6.5%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

Japan represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 72% of total imports. South Korea (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by China (5.5%). The following importers - Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) - together made up 7.2% of total imports.

Imports into Japan decreased at an average annual rate of -1.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+12.0%), South Korea (+7.2%) and Hong Kong SAR (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Korea and China increased by +6.6 and +3.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported preserved tomatoes in Eastern Asia, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 4.5% share.

In Japan, preserved tomato imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+7.3% per year) and China (+12.6% per year).
